It is a Challenge to Succeed

“I am a nice person,” the man says to himself. “How come this other guy is happy and prosperous and I’m always struggling?” He then asks, “I am a good husband, a good father and a good worker. How come nothing seems to work out for me? Life just isn’t fair. I’m even smarter and willing to work harder than some of these other people who just seem to have everything going their way,” he says as he slumps into the sofa to watch another evening of television. But you see...

You have to be more than a good person and a good worker. You have to become a good planner, and a good dreamer. You have to see the future finished in advance.

You have to put in the long hours and work with the setbacks and the disappointments. You have to learn to enjoy the process of disciplines and of putting yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. You have to be prepared-- and willing-- to attack the challenges if you want the success because challenges are part of success.

Now that may sound like a full menu of activities, but let me assure you that the process of going from average to fortune isn’t really all that difficult. Thinking about it is the difficult part. Anticipating all the effort and the changes and the disciplines is far worse in the mind than in reality. I can promise you that the challenges you’ll meet on the road to success are far less difficult to deal with than the struggles and the disappointments that come from being average. Confronting and overcoming challenges is an exhilarating experience. It does something to feed the soul and the mind. It makes you more than you were before. It strengthens the mental muscles and enables you to become better prepared for the next challenge.

I’ve often said that to have more, we must first become more... and to become more, we must begin the process of working harder on ourselves than we do on anything else. But in addition to gathering new knowledge, new skills and new experiences, it is also important to discover new emotions. It is how we feel about what we know that makes the biggest difference in how our lives turn out. How we feel about the chances we have and the choices we have determines the intensity of our effort.

Whether we try or don’t try.

Join or don’t join.

Believe or don’t believe.

I’d like for you to discover some strong feelings about your life and about what you want to do with that life. You probably have much of the knowledge and a lot of the experience and perhaps most of the skills that it takes to become successful. What you may be lacking are the strong feelings about what you want and what you want to do. You may be one of those who have become so involved in the process of earning a living that you’ve forgotten about the choices and the chances you have for designing your own life.

Let these strong feelings help you take a second look at your life and where you’re headed. After all, you’ve only got one life, at least on this planet. So why not make it an adventure in achievement? Why not discover what you can do and what you can have? Why not discover how many others you can help, and in the process, how that can help you?

Why not now take the Challenge to Succeed!

Share your thoughts in the comment section below! Post your suggestions on how you plan to tackle your challenges to succeed into your day.

Our Lives Are a Compilation of the Little Things Decisions We Make

Over my career I have read and heard thousands of quotes from great leaders, but there is one I replay in my mind more than any other. Jim Rohn, one of the greatest personal development teachers of our time said,

“Success comes from making a series of good decisions over time, while failure comes from making a series of bad decisions over time.”

I believe this is one of the most accurate statements of human achievement ever articulated during the 20th Century.

Decisions to Ponder
Every day we each make hundreds of little decisions, most of which seem inconsequential at the time. But every decision—no matter how little—will lead us closer to or further from our goals. Today’s lesson will focus on what I define as “either/or” decisions, because you’re deciding to “either” do something “or” not do something.
  • Do we get out of bed early enough to properly prepare for the day?
  • Do we straighten up our bedroom and make the bed before heading out the door?
  • Do we dress and groom ourselves so that we make a positive impression on people?
  • Do we make food choices that will improve our health?
  • Do we control interruptions so we can focus on our responsibilities?
  • Do we set aside specific time to spend with our children?
  • Do we show our spouses that we love them?
  • When talking on the phone, do we sound happy to be speaking to the other person?
  • Do we exercise even when we don’t feel like it?
  • Do we think about what we want to say before speaking?
  • Do we show courtesy by holding the door open for someone else?
  • Do we compliment people when they are deserving of one?
  • Are we friendly in our emails?
  • Do we say please and thank you?
  • Do we show people respect by letting them finish talking before responding?
  • Do we apologize without making excuses when we are wrong?
  • Do we have a positive attitude even when things don’t go our way?
The Power of Our Decisions
These and hundreds of other little decisions we make each day may seem insignificant when looked at individually, but when looked at collectively they influence every part of our lives. From our relationships to our health, no part of our lives is exempt from the effects of these little decisions.

We are where we are and whom we are at this very moment in life based on the decisions we have made. Our physical health is largely the reflection of our decisions. Our finances are what they are because of our decisions. Where we work and what we earn is the outcome of our decisions. The state of our relationships is the result of our decisions. Everything we have or don’t have is a reflection of our decisions.

We can avoid accepting personal responsibility for our decisions by blaming others, but if we consider how something occurred, it all points to a decision we made.  From time to time there will be exceptions, but if we are honest with ourselves, our lives are a mirror image of our decisions.

There is also a positive side effect from intentionally making good decisions.  When you make wise choices regardless of how little they may be, you will feel happy with yourself and who you are becoming because you will know you are doing the right thing.

Improving Our Decision-Making
If deep down inside you want to become a better person and enjoy greater success and fulfillment in your life, then consider these suggestions.
  • Accept responsibility for your decisions and stop blaming others for where you find yourself today. This is the first step forward.
  • Become aware of decisions you are making every day and start making decisions consistent with the person you want to become.
  • Believe in yourself and in your ability to make good decisions. Follow your gut and do what you feel is right; 95% of the time you will make the right decision.  Like any skill, as you become intentional about making positive decisions, you will get better and better.
What methods do you use to make these little daily decisions? Which ones present the most challenges? I encourage you to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

The little decisions you make each day will form the person you become tomorrow.

Thinking Outside the Box

According to Dictionary.com, creativity is described as "the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships or the like, to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.” Said in simple terms, it’s thinking outside the box.

In this entry I am going to share with you one-of-the best techniques for being creative. By implementing this strategy throughout my career and personal life, I was forced to be innovative when it would have been easier to choose a more standard approach.

What do you do?

Before I share this strategy with you, I’d like you to consider your own. When you go into problem solving mode, how many different options do you generally consider? When you search for a better way to do something, do you make a list of your choices?

If you’re like most people I’ve met, you probably consider fewer than 5 options and these are the ones that immediately come to your mind. Are there others? Where are they? Deep in the recesses of your brain? It’s time to bring them out!

Make a list of 20 options

According to Todd Smith of the Little Things Matter, the next time you need to solve a problem or explore a better way to do something, compile a written list of 20 options. Not 5, 10 or 15. I said 20!

"The first five things you think of will be the tip of the iceberg. They’ll probably be the same five things everyone else would think of in a similar situation. They are the most obvious answers. The key here is to stretch yourself to think of 20. You will struggle getting up to 13 or 14, but your biggest breakthroughs will come when you push yourself to 18, 19 and 20. Often times it is in those final three where you will find the hidden jewels."

Here are some circumstances where you can apply this lesson:

  • Where your family should go on vacation next year
  • Evaluating where you want to move
  • Considering restaurant options for a special occasion
  • Your career options
  • Ways to cut expenses
  • Making investment decisions
  • How to stand out from the crowd in your profession
  • Strategies to drive sales
  • How to provide a higher level of service to your customers
  • Choosing different incentive programs for your sales team
  • Improving your ability to reach your target market
  • Finding a baby sitter on New Year’s Eve
The biggest challenge you will have is sticking with the process. It takes more effort than you think to make a list of 20 options. I have experienced several occasions where I had to really push myself to think of 20. Many times I had to take a break and come back to it. But the intense focus always opened my mind and forced me to ponder things that I normally wouldn’t have considered.

Here is my recommendation to you: The next time you have to solve a problem or think of a better way to accomplish something, sit down with a pad of paper and a pen and make a list of 20 options. Don’t stop at 17... Push yourself to 20.

Todd Smith then recommends, as your next step, to make a list of pros and cons for each option. From there, narrow your list down to your top options and study them. If you remove emotion from your decision and focus on the facts, it’s likely you’ll make the best decision. And at the very least you’ll feel confident that you’ve explored all of the available options.

For example, my husband and I were recently making plans to travel abroad to attend a close family member's funeral. The weekend prior to our scheduled flight all airports in the United Kingdom were shut down due to volcanic ash from the erupting volcano in Iceland. When they eventually opened, many people were vying for all available seats to and out of the UK. My husband and I were forced to take emotion out of the equation, and focus on the facts... should we continue out plan to have us both go and possibly not make the funeral on time, or do we send just one person with the guarantee to make the funeral on time. We chose the second option, and thus were able to have my husband take a flight to Paris and then a train to London. Had we not take emotion from the decision making process, we would not have obtained our goal to attend the funeral.

So, is there anything going on in your life right now where you can apply this lesson? If the answer is yes, grab a pad of paper and get started.

To be creative you must go where you have not been before. You must expand your mind to new ideas, opportunities and a fresh way of thinking. Only then will discover a new world of possibilities.

Discipline and Loyalty: Are They Dead?

We live in a world where these two great words (discipline and loyalty) are becoming meaningless.

Does this mean that they are worthless?

On the contrary, they are becoming priceless qualities because they are so hard to develop in the first place. And should you be one of the fortunate few who have caught the vision, your battle has just begun because the greatest battle is to keep what you’ve learned from these two priceless qualities.

Discipline is that great quality few people use that enables them to be constructively busy all the time. Even in discouragement and defeat, discipline will rescue you and usher you to a new place to keep constructively busy while you forget about doubt, worry and self-pity.

If more people in this day-and-age would realize the absolute necessity of discipline, and the degree of growth and happiness to be attained from it, what a better world this would be.

Most people think that loyalty is to a "thing" or to a "person", when actually, it is really to one’s own self. Some think that it is to a goal or an objective, but, again, it is to one’s own convictions. If loyalty has to be earned, then it is deserved, more than devoted emotion based on a temporary feeling. Loyalty is the character of a person who has taken upon them-self the task before them, and they will always realize that out of a loyal heart will spring all the other virtues that make life one of depth and growth.

As my mentor Jim Rohn once said,

"The best motivation is self-motivation. The guy says, ‘I wish someone would come by and turn me on.' What if they don't show up? You've got to have a better plan for your life."

If you aren't disciplined and loyal to yourself, your goals, your convictions, you will never have the motivation to accomplish the goals most valuable to you.

Will you commit, today, to write down your game plan, and commit yourself to achieving the desired outcome?

Realize the Value of Time: Time in Perspective.

Imagine there is a bank which credits your account each and every morning with $86,400. This account carries over no balance from day-to-day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you failed to use during the day.

What would you do?

Draw out every cent, of course!!

Well, everyone has such a bank account: its name is TIME.

Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as a lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you, and each night it burns the records of the day.

If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back and there is no drawing against tomorrow. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success!

The clock is running, so make most of TODAY.

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.

To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.

To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask lovers who are waiting to meet.

To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident.

To realize the value of ONE MILISECOND, ask the person who won a SILVER MEDAL in the Olympics.

Treasure every moment you have. Treasure it more because you shared it with someone special… special enough to spend your time.

And remember: Time waits for no one.

6 Mistakes To Avoid As A Home Based Business Owner

For the last 7 years, I have been researching and developing communication and sales techniques that turn people into millionaires. This list is a compilation of the rookie mistakes that many new home base business owners make when they first enter the business. I confess that I have personally committed a number of these mistakes in my day, and still fall prey to them on the occasion. Through continuing education, you, as did I, will be able to recognize when these mistakes arise, and quickly readjust your thinking as you build your home base business.

Mistake #1: We Hunt and Hound Instead of Attract

You are not in the business to “hunt down” prospects to look at your business opportunity, nor do you want to be continuously “hounding” prospects. This is time consuming, emotionally tiring, and plain ol’ bad manners. As in all things, the Golden Rule should apply:

Do unto others as you wish they do unto you.

Do you like to be convinced, manipulated or sold to? Most likely, you like the power of choice, the power to make decisions… and so do the people you want to attract and work with. What/ who are you really seeking after?

You are looking for people that are looking for you.

Be the kind of person you want to work with—a dynamic leader—and dynamic, charismatic people will hunt you for your business.

Mistake #2: We Talk Too Much/ “Puke Information”

When we start a new home based business we are excited, love everything about our company/ product, and want to share it with the world! While we think we’re sharing, in actually, we are “information overload”ing.

In this industry, more is less and less is more. The more you say the less your prospect wants to hear, and the less you say the more they want to hear.

Questions are the answers… Engage your prospect by asking questions about their business, their family, their interest. Find common ground. They in turn will ask you questions, and if they are sincerely interested, they will ask for more information.

Mistake #3: We Exaggerate the Opportunity

Frequently we say to people “It’s so easy, all you have to do is get people on the call” or “I only work 20 minutes a day and now I’m making $5,000/ week” or “I used to wear glasses to fix my eyesight, but this product cured me and now I can see without glasses”.

And they’re thinking… “I need to run away from this person as FAST as possible!”
Honesty is always the best policy. This goes back to mistake #1…
You are looking for people that are looking for you.

Do you really want to work with a person who is easily convinced and swayed by outrageous exaggerations? They will probably leave your opportunity as soon as they joined for the latest fad next week.

Mistake #4: We Spend More Time Managing Instead of Prospecting

When you prospect people for business partners and customers, you will inevitably enroll people, and thus, your business grows. When you spend more of your time training your enrollees, this is called managing. A prosperous home based business will always have this ratio:

80:20 Prospecting: Managing

The moment your ratio shifts into “management mode”, your business will stop growing. It is important that your prospects and enrollees value the time they meet with you. If they are unable to commit to appointments or neglect their assignments prior to meeting with them, guess what you tell them?

You are too busy to manage their business!

Mistake #5: We Look for Needers and Not Leaders

Inherently, we want to help those who stand to benefit from this business most. However, you cannot help those who do not want to help themselves. Aim to work with people that deserve your home based business opportunity, who deserve your time and help, not those who are not will to put in the time, creativity and passion.

People are attracted to leaders… be the leader they are searching for. This will aid you as you shift out the people who will not grow your business.

Mistake #6: We Treat out Home Based Business as a Hobby

This proclamation says it all. Concentrate on your behavior and activity, not on the results. A farmer plants his seeds in the spring time, and may not seed anything appear for weeks. Then the young shoots appear, and then the shoots turn into saplings, and then into true plants. Harvest Time does not appear for 4- 6 months. The farmer knows that he needs to be consistent in his effort to have the results he needs.

We home base business owners must maintain the same, consistent approach. Remember sow now and reap the benefits later.

Result?

Now that you are aware of the most common mistakes a new home base business owner make, you will be able to recognize when these mistakes arise, and quickly readjust your thinking as you build your home base business.

How to Set Goals & Act on Them

The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far-greater value than what you get.

When Andrew Carnegie died, they discovered a sheet of paper upon which he had written one of the major goals of his life:

Spend the first half of his life accumulating money and to spend the last half of his life giving it all away. And he did!

Some people are disturbed by those tough days because all they have is the days. They haven’t designed or described or defined the future.

Goals. There’s no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. And there’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.

We all need lots of powerful long-range goals to help us past the short-term obstacles.

The ultimate reason for setting goals is:

To entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.

Don’t set your goals too low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much.

If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.

As the late Mr. Jim Rohn once said, "We all have two choices: We can make a living or we can design a life."

Build Your Business with Facebook

With the sudden rise in Social Media in the past 18 months, Facebook has become one of the most visited websites online.

It has now been reported that Facebook gets more visitors every day than even Yahoo!

So with all these people to "be-friend" on Facebook, the question is,

“How do you use Facebook to build your Home Based Business?”

The answer is quite simple.

You make friends first.

Then, you attract followers by providing them good value in the form of thought provoking questions, comments, quotes and dialogue.

You’ll know who your followers are because they will read your status updates and comment on them or let you know that they like what you have to say.

Then, those followers will become a fan of yours, meaning that not only are they your friend and follower, but they will reach out to you and thank you for your contributions to your community and perhaps might even ask you what you do or how they might be able to work with you.

This might even result in a new customer, business partner or both.

This is called Permission Based Marketing and it makes for the best transaction between a seller and a buyer online.

Now, the worst thing you can do on Facebook, is pitch your deal.

Not only will people ignore you, but many will remove you as their friend if they feel that the only reason you are on Facebook is to sell your product or service.

Imagine going to a dentist and before they even ask you any questions, or begin work on your teeth, they are writing you a prescription and billing your insurance.

Not only didn’t they ask you anything about yourself, but they didn’t even find out if you even have a need.

To suggest to someone on Facebook that they should look at your company, product or service is considered rude, pushy, even annoying. This is otherwise known as spam.

Nobody likes to be sold, but everybody loves to buy.

So, brand yourself as a leader first – someone that people will come to know, like and trust.

Then, if people ask you about your business, that’s great. Let them engage you and then you can provide them with more information.

Now, if you contribute to your community on Facebook often, with great value, it’s fine to include a link to your personal blog or hub page or any other Social Media that you’ve created or that has been written or spoken about you.

Just don’t keep posting the same status that reads, “Make a Million in a Minute” with a link to your website.

Nobody cares about your business opportunity until they see that you are someone they’d even want to work with.

If all you post is business information, your intentions speak loudly on their own and you will alienate yourself.

If you treat your Facebook friends with respect and courtesy and contribute often, chances are that you will attract great people who ask what you do and how they can get more information.

Personality... do you have what it takes?

Great story that was recently sent to me, about a man who learned from, and aspired to be like, the top leaders not only in his industry, but in life:

"I want to tell you about my friend Alvin who used one of the best wealth secrets ever to double his income in his field. He worked selling vacuum cleaners door to door, but you can apply this to whatever field you're in.

He wasn't doing as well as the good salespeople in his local office. In fact, he was one of the worst vacuum salesperson on his whole crew!

The only thing that separated him from all the ones who came in and stayed for a week or two was his tenacity, that and his ingenuity.

So he went and interviewed his boss about what made the best and the worst sales people. He asked what qualities the best salespeople all had in common. He asked what habits they all shared in common. Best of all, he got it all on video.

Then he went and talked to the three best sales people on his crew. He asked what habits they had, what they did to get themselves psyched up in the morning. He asked how they handled common objections, and asked how they knew when they'd make the sale.

He got their permission to tape them-they were all happy to oblige. Generally speaking, successful people are happy to share the secrets to their success.

It's usually the under-successful that have a scarcity mentality, with their work methods and everything else.

(There is also the matter of pride here-who doesn't want to be acknowledged for how well they do things, get listened to, and seen as an expert or authority?)

Then, he went to the district manager and found out the best salespeople in the district. He interviewed them and got many of the same answers.

But he didn't stop there. He wanted to find out what the worst sales people had in common, too. Neither his local nor his district manager wanted to be rude and name the worst sales people by name. He was disappointed but not daunted.

Alvin knew where to find some of the people who didn't last very long. Several of them hung out at the same bar. So he went there with camera in hand and told them he was making a video covering the vacuum sales experience. He said he was interviewing the people who'd been around the longest and the people who decided it just wasn't for them.

A couple of rounds later, he had four interviews from some of the worst salespeople his local office had seen. (Some traits they all shared, if you're wondering, was a lack of confidence in their abilities, negative thinking, and the unwillingness to keep trying--at least when it came to that specific job.)

He went and talked to the few people he'd made sales to. He asked them what their favorite things about the vacuums were. There were three common answers and he integrated those into his sales pitch.

He also asked when it was they decided to buy. He was a little surprised at the answer. None of the answers involved a feature or even a benefit of the vacuum. Every answer started with something like, "You really had me sold when you..."

Something clicked and Alvin learned what is perhaps one of the most important parts of salesmanship: nobody will ever buy from you if they don't like you. You can rarely if ever sell someone on your product or service, if you don't sell them on you first.

Alvin then rolled up his sleeves and went to the people that DIDN'T buy from him. Some were pretty vague and non-committal (he figured maybe he just hadn't made a good connection with those prospects.)

A handful of people, however, told him something they didn't like about the vacuum or his sales pitch. He came up with answers to objects about the vacuums and also modified his sales pitch. He even sold a vacuum to one of the people he'd missed selling the first time!

Alvin more than doubled his sales income. And then he doubled THAT income by selling the videos and teaching seminars on how to double your income! Most importantly, this is a strategy that can work in any field--not just vacuum sales.

In fact, you don't have to be in sales to use this strategy. Just learn your field from every angle possible and apply the knowledge and you can double your income just like my friend Alvin."

Nine Things More Important than Capital

When starting any enterprise or business, whether it is full-time or part-time, we all know the value of having plenty of capital (money). But I bet we both know or at least have heard of people who started with no capital who went on to make fortunes. How? You may ask.

Well, I believe there are actually some things that are more valuable than capital that can lead to your entrepreneurial success. Let me give you the list.

1. Time
Time is more valuable than capital. The time you set aside not to be wasted, not to be given away. Time you set aside to be invested in an enterprise that brings value to the marketplace with the hope of making a profit. Now we have capital time.

How valuable is time? Time properly invested is worth a fortune. Time wasted can be devastation. Time invested can perform miracles, so you invest your time.

2. Desperation
I have a friend, Linda, whose first major investment in her new enterprise was desperation. She said, "My kids are hungry, I’ve gotta make this work. If this doesn't work, what will I do?" So she invested $1 in her enterprise selling a product she believed in. The $1 was to buy a few flyers so she could make a sale at retail, collect the money and then buy the product wholesale to deliver back to the customer.

A friend of a friend went to Chicago as a teenager after he got out of high school. And the first job he got was as a night janitor. Someone said, "Why would you settle for night janitor?" He said, "Malnutrition." You work at whatever you can possibly get when you get hungry. You go to work somewhere—night janitor, it doesn't matter where it is. Years later now, Bill is a recipient of the Horatio Alger award, rich and powerful and one of the great examples of lifestyle that I know. But, his first job—night janitor. Desperation can be a powerful incentive. When you say, “I must.”

3. Determination

Determination says I will. First Linda said, "I must find a customer." Desperation. Second, she said, "I will find someone before this first day is over." Sure enough, she found someone. She said, "If it works once, it will work again." But then the next person said, "No." Now what must you invest?

4. Courage

Courage is more valuable than capital. If you've only got $1 and a lot of courage, I'm telling you, you've got a good future ahead of you. Courage in spite of the circumstances. Humans can do the most incredible things no matter what happens. Haven't we heard the stories? There are some recent ones from the Middle East that are some of the most classic, unbelievable stories of being in the depths of hell and finally making it out. It's about humans, real life people, and you can't sell humans short. Courage in spite of, not because of, but in spite of. Now once Linda has made 3 or 4 sales and gotten going, here's what now takes over.

5. Ambition
"Wow! If I can sell 3, I can sell 33. If I can sell 33, I can sell 103." Wow. Linda is now dazzled by her own dreams of the future.

6. Faith
Now she begins to believe she's got a good product. This is probably a good company. And she then starts to believe in herself. Linda, single mother, 2 kids, no job. "My gosh, I'm going to pull it off!" Her self-esteem starts to soar. These are investments that are unmatched. Money can't touch it. What if you had a million dollars and no faith? You'd be poor. You wouldn't be rich. Now here is the next one, the reason why she's a millionaire today.

7. Ingenuity
Putting your brains to work. Probably up until now, you've put about 1/10 of your brainpower to work. What if you employed the other 9/10? You can't believe what can happen. Humans can come up with the most intriguing things to do. Ingenuity. What's ingenuity worth? A fortune. It is more valuable than money. All you need is a $1 and plenty of ingenuity. Figuring out a way to make it work, make it work, make it work.

8. Heart and Soul

What is a substitute for heart and soul? It's not money. Money can't buy heart and soul. Heart and soul is more valuable than a million dollars. A million dollars without heart and soul, you have no life. You are ineffective. But, heart and soul is like the unseen magic that moves people, moves people to buy, moves people to make decisions, moves people to act, moves people to respond.

9. Personality
You've just got to spruce up and sharpen up your own personality. You've got plenty of personality. Just get it developed to where it is effective every day, effective no matter who you talk to, whether it is a child or whether it is a business person, whether it is a rich person or a poor person. A unique personality that is at home anywhere. One of Jim Rohn's mentors, Bill Bailey, taught, "You've got to learn to be just as comfortable, Mr. Rohn, whether it is in a little shack in Kentucky having a beer and watching the fights with Winfred, my old friend or in a Georgian mansion in Washington, DC as the Senator's guest." Move with ease whether it is with the rich or whether it is with the poor. And it makes no difference to you who is rich or who is poor. A chance to have a unique relationship with whomever. The kind of personality that's comfortable. The kind of personality that's not bent out of shape.

And lastly, let's not forget charisma and sophistication. Charisma with a touch of humility. This entire list is more valuable than money. With one dollar and the list I just gave you, the world is yours. It belongs to you, whatever piece of it you desire whatever development you wish for your life. I've given you the secret. Capital. The kind of capital that is more valuable than money and that can secure your future and fortune. Remember that you lack not the resources.

Concentration: Be There!

I had the great opportunity, and pleasure, to work in a trade show booth with a team member this past week. The banners unrolled fantastically and were hung with excitement, the velor burnt-yellow table cloth didn't have a wrinkle, and our samples were chilled to perfection. We were ready!!

But as the day wore on, I noticed that my team member, and business partner, had other things on his mind. With complications regarding the health of his two littlest family members. He was worried about his children, and his dear wife who hadn't left the house in days as she cares for the babies. This team member, my business partner and friend, is certainly having his faith tested.

Not far into the day, my friend turned to me, and with concern on his face, said, "I feel so guilty for being here. I feel like I should be home with my wife and family."

How many times during the day do these same thoughts cross our own mind? While at work, at the gym, even at home with our significant other and our children, we can only think about the things we need to do elsewhere. We are never truly living 'in the moment', never truly focusing on the most important thing in front of us.

I believe Jim Rohn shared the most important counsel given to him when he said, "The best advice I ever came across on the subject of concentration is: Wherever you are, be there."

"May I ask a personal question?," I inquired of my friend. "When you are home with your family... What do you think about? What's on your mind?".

"All I can think about is wanting to work on my business... I feel guilty for not working hard enough, or putting in enough hours."

My friends, do you see the cycle? This happens to even the best of us... We willfully allow our concentration to be focused on things not in front of us, and we allow negative feelings of guilt, discouragement, and despair to creep in.

May I suggest we follow the counsel given to Jim Rohn, "Wherever you are, be there." When you are with you family, focus all of your energy, your thoughts, your love, on them. When you are working out in the gym, focus on the weights, the cardio, the pain of the muscles as they rip and open to new life. When you are working on your business, focus on the client, the project, the goals that sit in front of you. People will notice when your mind is elsewhere.

Although the health complications of my friend's family didn't change that afternoon, his thought process did. I saw him become more confident, and more focused, on the people and opportunity in front of him at the trade show.

And YES, there is a happy ending...

He developed a great report, and created a wonderful connection, with another vendor there... who insisted on placing a large initial order before the conclusion of the show, with the possibility of subsequent large orders in the near future. Had he not changed his thoughts to what was at hand in front of him, he may have missed this great blessing to his business.

Concentration: BE THERE!!

How Much to Start up the Business?

A very nice lady, whom I went to high school with, emailed me via Facebook two weeks ago to ask me a question about my business.

Instead of explaining in detail about the low start up cost, why Stephen & I left our old Company and Product, I didn't even mention the Break Even Bonus, I offered her and her family FREE SAMPLES requesting their feedback and that they watch the videos posted on my website.

In any case, she said "Yes" and was sent the samples. Today, when she emailed me back, after providing me with a list of excuses as to why she can't possibly work this business, she asked, “How Much to Start up the Business?”

My response:

"That’s a good question Marie, but what I have found is that people who ask what it costs before they even know what “it” is, are more concerned about spending money than earning it. The truth is, there is far more of an investment of your time, energy and creativity than there is of money."

Her second question was, "How Long until the Residual Income is Coming In?". Again, My response:

"And the residual income? Well, that depends on how much you want in return. I don’t know how much you will put in or how committed you will be, so truly, that is impossible for me to answer. Again, you must put in more of your time, talent and discipline, than money, to be successful.

I can tell you want my results have been, but that would not be accurate for you to make a decision as I may have put more, or less, time and energy than you are willing to commit to be successful."

So, the moral of the story?

By providing value and then perhaps very gently suggesting that if a person is interested in your business, to let you know, you might create enough curiosity resulting in a new prospect or lead.

Certainly, you want to be more interested in them, than interesting to them.

Learn more about them than they learn about you.

With this formula, you can’t go wrong.

Marie certainly appreciated it.

After all, the Investment is never just about capital, but about how much of yourself you are willing to put into your business - which is far more valuable than money.

Copout, Holdout, Dropout or Allout? Which One Are You?

First, there are the “Copouts” – These are people who don’t have goals. They just want to remain the same and do nothing different to change their lives or the lives of anyone around them. You know the type.

Second, there are the “Holdouts” – These are people who would like to be more, do more and have more, but are afraid. They allow their fears to control them and never get started on the path to their dreams.

Then there are the “Dropouts” – These people get started, but just never finish. They do not keep their committments and do not continue fostering relationships. They have all the potential, but none of the results because they buy their own excuses time and time again.

And Finally, the “Allouts” – These are the people with the results. These are the people who are on the leaderboards, who get recognition on calls and webinars, who walk the stage.
These are the people who entered into their business not just with a Resolution, but for a REVOlution and do whatever it takes to be successful – no excuses, no stories or reasons why they couldn’t, shouldn’t or wouldn’t get the job done.

So, after reading the above information, you’ll know exactly which type of OUT you are.
Copout, Holdout, Dropout or Allout!

The Parable of Brother Leo

A legend tells of a French monastery known throughout Europe for the extraordinary leadership of a man known only as Brother Leo. Several monks began a pilgrimage to visit Brother Leo to learn from him. Almost immediately, they began to bicker about who should do various chores.

On the third day they met another monk going to the monastery, and he joined them. This monk never complained or shirked a duty, and whenever the others would fight over a chore, he would gracefully volunteer and do it himself. By the last day, the others were following his example, and from then on they worked together smoothly.

When they reached the monastery and asked to see Brother Leo, the man who greeted them laughed. "But our brother is among you!" And he pointed to the fellow who had joined them.

Today, many people seek leadership positions, not so much for what they can do for others but for what the position can do for them: status, connections, perks, advantages. They do service as an investment, a way to build an impressive resume.

The parable about Brother Leo teaches another model of leadership, where leaders are preoccupied with serving rather than being followed, with giving rather than getting, with doing rather than demanding. Leadership based on example, not command. This is called servant leadership.

Can you imagine how much better things would be if more politicians, educators, and business executives saw themselves as servant leaders?

Challenge for Goal- Setters

Personal-achievement expert Bob Proctor has this challenge for goal-setters: "It’s absolutely essential that the goal is something you want. There’s no playing it safe by simply going after what you THINK you can do. You’ve got to want it. And you want it because it’s moving you in the direction of your vision. It’s not just getting a nicer car or earning an extra dollar—your goal is something you dearly want. It’s your heart’s desire. It’s helping you move in the direction of your vision."

Workplace lingo: The good and bad of office jargon

01.12.10 Posted by AP, Chip Cutter

NEW YORK (AP) — At the end of the day, it’s important to achieve a win-win solution. Be sure to think outside the box to demonstrate thought leadership. And harness key learnings to change the game on that mission-critical project.

Confused? You have company. Many workers say they’re fed up with business jargon and corporate buzzwords.

Every industry has its own lingo. In technology, employees use “bandwidth” in conversations that have nothing to do with the Internet, saying things like, “I don’t have the bandwidth to deal with this situation.”

In finance, workers toss about terms such as “best-in-breed” when referring to investments. And young attorneys at large law practices like to say they’re “underwater” when they’re busy, said Bob Knaier, a senior associate at a San Diego firm.

“It’s a nice example of how attorneys want to make things sound much more drastic than they are,” Knaier said. “‘I’m not just busy, but my life is at stake; I’m drowning in work.’”

Business speak does have some up sides, for example, creating a sense of camaraderie among co-workers. But many people still feel it can go a bit too far. Here are some tips for coping with the babble:

UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE USE IT

Business people use jargon, thinking they’re showing off their intelligence or trying to win respect from their peers, even if it doesn’t work that way, said Michael Sebastian, a Web editor at Ragan Communications, a Chicago-based publishing and training company.

Others turn to jargon to avoid offending people or appearing politically incorrect, said Chelsea Hardaway, the co-author of “Why Business People Speak Like Idiots.”

So they’ll use terms such as “right sizing” for layoffs. Or, Hardaway said, “my plate’s pretty full,” is a way workers avoid saying they’d “rather die than take on your project.”

Jargon can come out of pop culture, too. Business people may not want to acknowledge that much of their work consists of mundane phone calls and e-mails. So, they’ll glamorize their tasks by using terms such as “mission critical” or “centers of excellence,” she said, to make every project sound like a “James Bond mission.”

Of course, jargon often muddles a point and forces people to explain themselves in simple terms. It can also lead to situations where entire offices fear saying anything real, Hardaway said.

KNOW WHEN JARGON IS GOOD, AND WHEN IT’S BAD

Sometimes, it can help to use the same bloated language as your boss, because it often makes you appear part of the group.

“You want to be able to speak the language that people in the corporation are speaking,” said Robert M. McCann, an associate professor at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. “If you cannot speak the lingo, that could hurt you.”

But, at the same time, jargon can frustrate, annoy or intimidate colleagues. And it’s important to realize that.

Kristina Hajjar, the director of communications for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said the fire service creates acronyms or abbreviations for almost everything. Her boss, the fire chief, is the “FC,” for examples, and a key handbook is known as the “FOG,” for the field operations guide.

She understands the terms now, but said she was at a loss when she was hired 12 years ago.

“It was just like entering a different world,” she said. “I felt like I was really in a foreign country.”

Moreover, that’s how outsiders can feel if they’re visiting a company or getting a sales pitch and they don’t understand everything an employee is saying.

HOW TO SPEAK PLAIN ENGLISH

So, if you find yourself speaking a lot of corporate gobbledygook and think it’s getting to be a problem, here’s some advice.

First, ask yourself whether you’d speak the same way at home, as you do in the office.

Sebastian, the Ragan Communications editor, jokes that you’d never say: “‘Hi honey, you really thought outside the box with that dinner — those deliverables with the fresh vegetables were outstanding.’” So why talk that way in the office?

If you need help to break the habit, ask a friend or colleague to hold you accountable. Every time you say a jargon word, agree to pay a penalty that goes toward a happy hour fund or some other purpose.

At the public relations firm Melwood Global, for instance, employees are fined $5 for using the jargon phrase “at the end of the day.”

“We use it way too much,” said John Boit, a co-founder of the company. “It’s a totally senseless and stupid phrase.”

All the jargon money goes to support an orphanage for girls in Kenya.

It can also help to create a list of words to ban, or at least reconsider, in your office, Sebastian said. Enlist the help of your colleagues, and reach out to managers in other departments to get their input, since every work area has its own form of jargon. But be careful you don’t go too far — remember that some people like their jargon.

Sebastian’s recommendation: Elimate “optimize,” ‘’synergies,” ”deliverables,” and “actionables.”

Other possibilities are “stimulus,” ”toxic assets” and “too big to fail,” recently added to Lake Superior State University’s List of Words to Be Banished because they’re overused.

Workers who stop using those trite phrases may find there’s a big payoff, Hardaway said.

“You start to become respected,” she said, “and start to become the only clear voice in this sort of sea of monotony.”

Generating Leads withOUT Spending a Dime

Recently I sent an email to my list of friends from multiple companies with a request of their top 5 problems they are having with their networking businesses. Overwhelmingly the number one response was "How do I generate more leads?".

So with that in mind, I want to give you some simple, proven tips and strategies that you can implement right away.

The first one is Youtube. Believe it or not, you can get lots of leads over a period of time by utilizing this FREE service.

What you want to do is go to www.youtube.com create an account and then start posting short INFORMATIONAL videos on either your company or tips you can give people that would help them. Over a period of time your videos will begin to rank higher in search engines and YouTube specific searches. People who are looking for what you have to offer will often contact you and request info. You can take this to a much higher level with some systems and tips I learned from Carbon Copy Pro. www.createwealthmarketing.com is the site I use.

Another great way to build leads is to subscribe to social networks. The obvious ones are Facebook and Twitter first. Some additional suggestions are: FriendFeed, Identi.ca, Brightkite and more.

Another great way to generate FREE leads is Blogging. This is exactly what I am doing on this site. :) I try and post relevant information that can help people. Eventually you build rapport with people and If anything happens to their current company or they are just looking to move from one company to the next, and they like you, there’s a good chance you are the one they are going to contact.

Introduction from 'The Power of Discipline', by Brian Tracy

Why are some people more successful than others? Why do some people make more money, live happier lives and accomplish much more in the same number of years than the great majority?

I started out in life with few advantages. I did not graduate from high school. I worked at menial jobs. I had limited education, limited skills and a limited future.

And then I began asking, "Why are some people more successful than others?" This question changed my life.

Over the years, I have read thousands of books and articles on the subjects of success and achievement. It seems that the reasons for these accomplishments have been discussed and written about for more than two thousand years, in every conceivable way. One quality that most philosophers, teachers and experts agree on is the importance of self-discipline. As Al Tomsik summarized it years ago, "Success is tons of discipline."

Some years ago, I attended a conference in Washington. It was the lunch break and I was eating at a nearby food fair. The area was crowded and I sat down at the last open table by myself, even though it was a table for four.

A few minutes later, an older gentleman and a younger woman who was his assistant came along carrying trays of food, obviously looking for a place to sit.

With plenty of room at my table, I immediately arose and invited the older gentleman to join me. He was hesitant, but I insisted. Finally, thanking me as he sat down, we began to chat over lunch.

It turned out that his name was Kop Kopmeyer. As it happened, I immediately knew who he was. He was a legend in the field of success and achievement. Kop Kopmeyer had written four large books, each of which contained 250 success principles that he had derived from more than fifty years of research and study. I had read all four books from cover to cover, more than once.

After we had chatted for awhile, I asked him the question that many people in this situation would ask, "Of all the one thousand success principles that you have discovered, which do you think is the most important?"

He smiled at me with a twinkle in his eye, as if he had been asked this question many times, and replied, without hesitating, "The most important success principle of all was stated by Thomas Huxley many years ago. He said, 'Do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.'"

He went on to say, "There are 999 other success principles that I have found in my reading and experience, but without self-discipline, none of them work."

Self-discipline is the key to personal greatness. It is the magic quality that opens all doors for you, and makes everything else possible. With self-discipline, the average person can rise as far and as fast as his talents and intelligence can take him. But without self-discipline, a person with every blessing of background, education and opportunity will seldom rise above mediocrity.

5 Reasons Why Dreams Don't Take Flight, by Dr. John C. Maxwell

Most of us never see our dreams come true. Instead of soaring through the clouds, our dreams languish like a broken-down airplane confined to its hangar. Through life, I have come to identify five common reasons why dreams don’t take flight.

No. 1 We Have Been Discouraged from Dreaming by Others
We have to pilot our own dreams; we cannot entrust them to anyone else. People who aren’t following their own dreams resent us pursuing ours. Such people feel inadequate when we succeed, so they try to drag us down.

If we listen to external voices, then we allow our dreams to be hijacked. At some point, other people will place limitations on us by doubting our abilities. When surrounded by the turbulence of criticism, we have to grasp the controls tightly to keep from being knocked off course.

No. 2 We Are Hindered by Past Disappointments and Hurts
In the movie Top Gun, Tom Cruise plays Maverick, a young, talented and cocky aviator who dreams of being the premier pilot in the U.S. Navy. In the film’s opening scenes, Maverick showcases his flying ability, but also displays a knack for pushing the envelope with regards to safety. Midway through the movie, Maverick’s characteristic aggression spells disaster. His plane crashes, killing his best friend and co-pilot.

Although cleared of wrongdoing, the painful memory of the accident haunts Maverick. He quits taking risks and loses his edge. Struggling to regain his poise, he considers giving up on his dream. Although the incident nearly wrecks Maverick’s career, he eventually reaches within to find the strength to return to the sky.

Like Maverick, many of us live with the memory of failure embedded in our psyche. Perhaps a business we started went broke, or we were fired from a position of leadership. Disappointment is the gap that exists between expectation and reality, and all of us have encountered that gap. Failure is a necessary and natural part of life, but if we’re going to attain our dreams, then, like Maverick, we have to summon the courage to deal with past hurts.

No. 3 We Fall into the Habit of Settling for Average
Average is the norm for a reason. Being exceptional demands extra effort, sustained inspiration and uncommon discipline. When we attempt to give flight to our dreams, we have to overcome the weight of opposition. Like gravity, life’s circumstances constantly pull on our dreams, tugging us down to mediocrity.

Most of us don’t pay the price to overcome the opposition to our dreams. We may start out inspired, but through time, we fatigue. Although never intending to abandon our dreams, we begin to make concessions here and there. Through time, our lives become mundane, and our dreams slip away.

No. 4 We Lack the Confidence Needed to Pursue Our Dreams
Dreams are fragile. They will be buffeted by assaults from all sides. As such, they must be supplied with the extra strength of self-confidence.

In Amelia Earhart’s day, women were not supposed to fly airplanes. If she had lacked self-assurance, she never would have even attempted to be a pilot. Instead, Earhart confidently chased after her dream, and she was rewarded with both fulfillment and fame.

No. 5 We Lack the Imagination to Dream
For thousands of years, mankind traveled along the ground: by foot, by horse-and-buggy, by locomotive, and eventually by automobile. Thanks to the dreams of Orville and Wilbur Wright, we now hop across oceans in a matter of hours. The imaginative brothers overcame ridicule and doubt to pioneer human flight, and the world has never been the same.

Many of us play small because we do not allow ourselves to dream. We trap ourselves in reality and never dare to go beyond what we can see with our eyes. Imagination lifts us beyond average by giving us a vision of life that surpasses what we are experiencing currently. Dreams infuse our spirit with energy and spur us on to greatness.

Your Dream Begins Today, by Les Brown

What will your life be like when you’ve achieved your most deeply held dreams? Let’s take a look at how you can start living your dreams this very day.

Do you have a dream, a vision of the life you wish to live?
How specific is that dream?
How clear is that vision?
How do you intend to reach it?
What obstacles stand in your way?
Are your fears holding you back or are you using them to move you forward?

Your fears can actually lead you to success. Fear is an intense emotion. But that doesn’t mean it has to control you, or even stop you. Fear can prepare you and push you forward just as strongly as it can hold you back. Fear heightens your awareness and increases your physical strength. Fear brings your mind to sharp focus. With all that going for you, does it make sense to just run and hide? Of course not. Fear gets you in shape to take action!

Are you waiting for things to get better before moving ahead? If you’re serious about success, you need to start taking action today. If you’re waiting for things to be perfect, you’ll wait forever and nothing will ever get done.

The way to achieve is to bloom where you’re planted, to do what you can, where you are, with what you have. It’s easy to think up excuses for not taking action. “If only I had more hours in the day. If only I had a better job. If only I could meet the right person.” But excuses won’t bring you anything of value. You’ve got to change your “if only” into an “I will.” “I will make better use of my time. I will work on improving my career. I will create and nurture my relationships.”

Take a chance. Have faith in yourself. Your circumstances will improve when you make the effort to improve them. Start where you are right now. You have everything it takes to reach for whatever you desire. Stop wishing. Use your time, your energy, your thoughts and efforts to make it happen! You’ll be glad you did!
